It’s Time to Embrace AI — A Call to Action for Teachers and School Leaders

The Future of Education Technology Conference (FETC) last week served as a vivid reminder of the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI). Among the most striking revelations was that the topic of AI accounted for nearly half of the sessions. The overarching message was clear: AI is not a fleeting trend but a fundamental aspect of the future our students will navigate. As educators and school leaders, the time to act is now.

Despite the surge in AI's prominence, a worrying trend has emerged. A significant gap exists in the legal framework and state-level guidelines for AI usage in schools. This regulatory vacuum leaves educators to charter these untested waters on their own. In one of my sessions that focused on the legal aspects of AI in education, it became glaringly apparent that we are lacking both legislation and clear directives from our state leaders. 

This lack of guidance is not just a bureaucratic oversight; it represents a substantial hurdle in integrating AI into our educational frameworks. The slow pace of progress in many schools is concerning. Many schools have not yet offered professional development specifically addressing AI. Worse still, quality discussions among administrative teams about AI integration are not happening at the scale and depth required. This hesitation or lack of action is not just a missed opportunity but a disservice to our students who will live in a world where AI is touches just about everything.

But, it's not all bleak. The solution lies within our reach, and it starts with acknowledging the urgency of the situation. First, we must advocate for and participate in professional development focused on AI. Understanding AI's capabilities, ethical considerations, and potential applications in education is critical for both teachers and school leaders.

Next, initiating meaningful and forward-thinking discussions at the administrative level is crucial. These conversations should not only focus on the 'how' of integrating AI but also on the 'why'. It’s about preparing our students for a future where AI is the norm, not the exception.

Waiting for external directives can no longer be the norm. The pace of technological advancement won't wait for reluctant educators or slow-to-act school leaders. We need to be at the forefront, guiding our students and shaping how AI is integrated into our curricula and school culture.

The message from FETC is loud and clear: AI in education is not just coming; it's already here, and it is stressing our classroom teachers. The absence of comprehensive legal guidelines and state directives should not be a barrier but a call to action. We, as educators, have the power and responsibility to lead this charge. By embracing AI, we not only enhance our teaching practices but more importantly, we prepare our students for a future that is inseparably intertwined with artificial intelligence.
